West Castle River

After getting all packed up on Friday night we were up, had a shower for the last time in a while, grabbed breakfast, and headed out. We travelled down highway 2 and cut across at Nanton to Hwy 22, continuing on to the Crowsnest Pass.  We rented a very nice GMC Yukon XL which was a little high end, but suited us quite nicely.

We stopped for a quick look at a fly fishing shop before heading south towards the Castle Mountain Ski Resort. Just before there after crossing the West Castle River, we found a nice little random camping spot just off the river. There was most of a picnic table and a fire ring which was very nice and more than expected. We got the tent set up and had lunch while crimping the barbs on our order of flies, before heading out to the river just behind the site.

The West Castle River was nice to me as I hooked a nice cutthroat trout on my 3rd cast on a foam hopper.

Mike had a little less luck but got a couple fish to rise, but they wouldn't quite take his hook.

We hopped back in the truck and headed down to the end of the road, at the Castle Mountain Ski Resort where it was packed with people as they write having Huckleberry Festival. We took a quick look around from the car, then headed back up the road to Beaver Mines to get cell service and let family know what our plans are. On the way back we took a quick stop to Beaver Mines Lake to see what it looked like before making it back to site for dinner.

After dinner we checked out the trailhead for our hike in the morning, then got some more evening fishing in. There were a few that rose up to the fly, but didn't take the hook. I had a point where I got concerned hearing something in the bushes just across the river. After getting my bear spray ready and my gear packed and in my hands, I saw a beaver push through the bushes dragging half a tree. He swam in the water for a bit before submerging and dragging the branch under with him.

As I was dealing with the beaver. Mike was dealing with many, many bats flying over him. They were taking the bugs that took off of the river that the fish didn't get while they were on the surface.

After it was fully dark and you could barely see your fly on the water, we headed back to site for a quick fire and a pre-bed snack, then packed up and headed to bed.
