We got up just after the 8am train came through, and packed up camp. For
breakfast we went out to the Stone's Throw Cafe, a little diner on main street
Blairmore. We grabbed eggs benedict on waffles and hot chocolate, and it was
great. We went over to IGA to reprovision with perishables.
We headed down Hwy 3 to try our luck on the Crowsnest River. We drove
downstream to Lundbreck Falls to start. It was really scenic I had one fish
come up and take a look but there wasn't anything else. There was one fish
rising sporadically but was in just the perfect spot where neither of us could
cast to.
After enjoying the scenery we tried our hand upstream of the falls to about the same
luck.
We went for a drive back further west and pulled in to a spot where a couple
other trucks were parked. There was a little fisher access through the fence
and the property was owned by the Nature Conservancy Canada. We crossed the field and the tracks to the
river and had little luck where we could get to.
We drove back into Blairmore and stopped at Timmie's for lunch before
continuing to Coleman to my new favourite little fly shop.
After getting some good advice and picking up some new flies it was time for
the picture at the official start of the Trunk Road.
The road was in fairly good repair and offered up some amazing scenery.
Just past km18 on the Trunk Road we turned onto Racehorse Creek Road and
worked our way down it. It appears to be cut in for a couple of small clear
cuts, but counties down to two Devon facilities. It is incredibly scenic and
out in the middle of nowhere.
We stopped to try and Fish around km9, the first time that the creek comes close to the
road. We didn't have any luck but it was a great spot.
Just past km12 we crossed a bridge and found a perfect backcountry site at
the confluence of Racehorse Creek and Wintering Creek.
Things were clouding up but it was still nice to get set up far away from anyone. Then surprisingly we saw a couple quads that went by, and later a
pickup went down the road. We were trying to beat the rain and taking the hiking
trail that follows Racehorse Creek further downstream for some fishing.
We ended up finding
a great pool right as the rain started and managed to hide out under an
overhand for 10 minutes or so.
Right after the rain eased, a fish stated rising, so we started
casting our PMD flies that we picked up from the shop. Nothing was working.
They would take bugs on the water just in front or behind or beside our fly. We
were thinking our flies were a little too big to match what was on the water.
We got back to site and made a good fire and had
some smokies for dinner. The clouds lifted up for some fabulous stars right
before bed. Both of us had some strange dreams during the night, and there were a
couple of rain showers, but thankfully nothing else.
